Abstract Gallery
John Michael talks about his art...

Since the early 80s I have had a passion for artistic painting. But it wasn't until the mid-90s that I began to focus on pure abstract forms. I love contrast. I love interesting shapes and brush strokes. Using a variety of painting surfaces, a variety of colors and tools, my abstracts are now full of energy and convey the passion I have for abstract art work.

I studied architecture at Iowa State University and the University of Minnesota. And I still admire the great architects. I've been drawn to the great Abstract Expressionists, Expressionist artists, and Assemblage Art. I greatly admire and have studied the art of such masters as Franz Kline, Jasper Johns, De Kooning and Larry Rivers. I've also studied the work of artists from the Far East. As a result, you may see elements of abstract expressionism, minimalism, the orient, calligraphy, and architecture in my provocative abstract paintings.

I feel art should say something, provide a message. And with my abstracts I want someone who views my work to be energized, to be drawn to the work, and to study my art as one would dreamily watch the clouds and see familiar shapes.
